Experimental documentaries can share the same mode of production. That is, one that is process based. Collecting image and sound and working it into a finished piece through response to the material and/or the technique being applied. This is quite different to the way that fiction film is made, which proceeds from extensive pre-production planning.
The term experimental documentary can refer to:
- Documentaries that forged new forms at the time of their making- Moi, in noir.
- The novel application of techniques not usually applied to documentaries- such as Hollywood fiction style in The Thin Blue Line.
- Documentary approaches used by artist film and video makers- The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes, Handsworth Songs
- Highly reflective documentary- which questions the theology of documentaries- Sans Soleil
